Most evergreen formal hedges will benefit from two cuts each year, usually when they are actively growing from late spring to late summer. If you only cut once, do the job in September so that the hedge stays neat throughout the winter. These shears can also be used for trimming grass. The wavy blades are designed to reduce the chance of grass or hedge cuttings being jammed between them during use. The tension of the blades can be adjusted by turning the central knob.
